Customer Rating: Summary: Useful, balanced information Comment: The book was recommended reading on the DAN (Divers Alert Network) website... and with good reason. It thoroughly covers the basic levels of fitness you're going to need when you dive. Probably most importantly it doesn't overlook the importance of flexibility and a good program of stretching. It advocates for a balanced approach to your fitness regimen: flexibility; aerobic fitness; strength exercises. Also, it give you practical diving-based applications for each of the suggested exercises so you KNOW how it's going to help you -- or allows you to focus your energy on an area where you know you're lacking. Great little book. Glad I got it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Good general workout. Comment: I got this book the other day, and scanned through it to compare with my newly-designed fitness program. The exercises and recommendations are the same as the ones recommended to me by a personal trainer, and I have no criticism of the substance of the book.
If you're looking for a good, general-purpose fitness book, this one is as good as any. The small, black-and-white photos aren't particularly clear, but they generally get the point across. However, I found it long on fitness and short on diving information. The introductory chapters begin with an overview of the physical demands placed on divers. Muscle groups and diving activities are paired based on use (e.g., shoulder muscles are useful when climbing into a Zodiac). At the end of each exercise, there's a sentence or so that lists the diving activity that will be helped by performing that exercise.
I would have liked to see a little more detailed discussion of how depth places additional stress on the cardiopulmonary system, how enriched air nitrox factors into cardiovascular performance, and how the different types of tissues (muscle, fat) absorb and desorb nitrogen at different rates.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great fitness program for scuba and life Comment: For new and experienced divers, for young and old divers, this book provides a comprehensive fitness program for diving safely and enjoying it. The authors explain the variety of demands diving places on the body, from carrying heavy equipment to swimming up-current and climbing boat ladders in choppy seas. For each of these activities, they index specific exercises to build fitness. The exercises themselves are presented step-by-step, with terrific illustrations. Practical and goal-oriented, this book belongs on every diver's book shelf.
